Jimmy Shortell is a freelance trumpeter, accordionist and keyboard player born in Long Island, NY, transplanted to Corpus Christi as a kid and based out of the Austin, TX area since 1983. Located to Austin to study trumpet at The University of Texas at Austin with the Late Raymond Crisara and never left.
A couple of years out of college began a 9 year run in the Tejano music industry which included 8 years of steady touring and recording employment with Grammy Winner Ruben Ramos and The Mexican Revolution on Sony Discos. Other major label recordings in that time period included recordings with Little Joe Y La Familia, A.B. Quintanilla III And The Kumbia Kings, Johnny Hernandez and Third Coast, Tortilla Factory, Joel Guzman and Townes Van Zandt (Tomato Records)
The last 20 years have been a steady diet of teaching private trumpet and small group lessons, a busy recording schedule of somewhere around 250 recording sessions for records, jingles, and soundtracks. 10 seasons of school workshops and school concerts with The Austin Jazz Workshop. Jazz big band work with Baker's Dozen and John Mills' Times Ten and more. Cover group work The Pictures, The Matt Wilson Band and more, Country and Western and Western Swing bands, Asleep At The Wheel, Rick Trevino, Tony Harrison and Alex Dormont and Hot Texas Swing and more. Soundtrack work includes "Bernie" with Jack Black in 2011 and "All Is Bright" with Paul Rudd and Paul Giamatti in 2013.
